SFTP provides file access, transfer, and management tools that resemble FTP through a secure SSH connection. However, SFTP is <strong>not<\/strong> merely FTP over SSH. Instead, it is an entirely separate protocol.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about SFTP, read the SFTP Wikipedia article.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout callout-info\">\n<div class=\"callout-heading\">Note:<\/div>\n<div class=\"callout-content\">\n<p>If you do <strong>not<\/strong> already have an SFTP client, you can download Cyberduck\u2122 for evaluation purposes.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"configure-your-sftp-client\">Configure your SFTP client<\/h2>\n<p>SFTP clients typically require the following information to connect to a server:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Hostname<\/strong> \u2014 The server\u2019s hostname (for example, <code>hostname.example.com<\/code>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>SSH port number<\/strong> \u2014 The port number on which <code>sshd<\/code> listens (for example, <code>22<\/code>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Security<\/strong> \u2014 Whether the client combines FTP and SFTP functionality.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Username<\/strong> \u2014 The SSH username that the client uses to connect to the server. The username can be a valid cPanel account username or the <code>root<\/code> user.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout callout-warning\">\n<div class=\"callout-heading\">Important:<\/div>\n<div class=\"callout-content\">\n<p>You <strong>cannot<\/strong> use an FTP account to connect via SFTP.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Password<\/strong> \u2014 The SSH user\u2019s password.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Private Key<\/strong> \u2014 The SSH user\u2019s private key. This is the absolute path to a private key on your local computer (for example, <code>c:dataid_dsa<\/code>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout callout-warning\">\n<div class=\"callout-heading\">Important:<\/div>\n<div class=\"callout-content\">\n<p>You may see a warning that the server\u2019s host key is unknown. To ensure that this message does not display again, accept the key and store it on your local computer.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"callout callout-info\">\n<div class=\"callout-heading\">Note:<\/div>\n<div class=\"callout-content\">\n<ul>\n<li>cPanel users can generate and download a private key via cPanel\u2019s <em>SSH Access<\/em> interface (<em>cPanel &gt;&gt; Home &gt;&gt; Security &gt;&gt; SSH Access<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>The <code>root<\/code> user can generate and download a private key via WHM\u2019s <em>Manage root\u2019s SSH Keys<\/em> interface (<em>WHM &gt;&gt; Home &gt;&gt; Security Center &gt;&gt; Manage root\u2019s SSH Keys<\/em>).<br \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Overview This document provides the information to connect to your cPanel account via SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol or Secure File Transfer Protocol).
