When a visitor attempts to find a website that your server hosts, their computer asks a nameserver for the IP address of the domain that they wish to view. The nameserver returns the IP address for your web server and directs the visitor to the correct page.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You <strong>must<\/strong> publish records for your domain names to nameservers so that visitors can reach those sites.<\/li>\n<li>These nameservers communicate with other nameservers to distribute the records of sites that your server hosts.<\/li>\n<li>The propagation period is the amount of time that it takes for a domain\u2019s DNS records to spread across the internet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can use several methods to update your nameservers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In all currently-supported cPanel &#038; WHM versions, you can use a series of WHM interfaces to configure and update your nameservers.<\/li>\n<li>In cPanel &#038; WHM version 74 and earlier, when you log in to WHM for the first time, the <em>Initial Setup Assistant<\/em> interface appears. The <em>Nameservers<\/em> section of this interface (Step 4) allows you to set up nameservers.\n<div class=\"callout callout-info\">\n<div class=\"callout-heading\">Note:<\/div>\n<div class=\"callout-content\">\n<p>We removed the <em>Initial Setup Assistant<\/em> interface in cPanel &#038; WHM version 76.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"configure-via-whm-interfaces\">Configure via WHM interfaces<\/h2>\n<p>To configure nameservers via the WHM interface, perform the following steps:<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"select-a-nameserver-software\">Select a nameserver software.<\/h5>\n<div class=\"callout callout-info\">\n<div class=\"callout-heading\">Note:<\/div>\n<div class=\"callout-content\">\n<p>If you already use your registrar\u2019s DNS services, you can skip this step.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>To select a nameserver software, perform the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Navigate to WHM\u2019s <em>Nameserver Selection<\/em> interface (<em>WHM &gt;&gt; Home &gt;&gt; Service Configuration &gt;&gt; Nameserver Selection<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Select the desired nameserver software.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Save<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The nameserver software that you can use depends on your cPanel &#038; WHM version:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In cPanel &#038; WHM version 84 and later, the system installs <em>PowerDNS<\/em> by default.<\/li>\n<li>In cPanel &#038; WHM version 82 and earlier, the system installs <em>BIND<\/em> by default.<\/li>\n<li>In cPanel &#038; WHM version 78, we deprecated the <em>MyDNS<\/em> and <em>NSD<\/em> nameservers and you can\u2019t select either setting.\n<ul>\n<li>MyDNS does <strong>not<\/strong> support Certificate Authority Authorization (CAA) records, which certificate authorities use to determine if they can issue certificates for a domain.<\/li>\n<li>MyDNS requires that you add external nameserver IP addresses to the <code>resolv.conf<\/code> file.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 id=\"configure-your-default-nameservers\">Configure your default nameservers.<\/h5>\n<p>To configure your default nameservers, perform the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Navigate to WHM\u2019s <em>Basic WebHost Manager Setup<\/em> interface (<em>WHM &gt;&gt; Home &gt;&gt; Server Configuration &gt;&gt; Basic WebHost Manager Setup<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>At the bottom of the interface, enter the desired nameserver names in the text boxes.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Save Changes<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We recommend that you use the following guidelines when you name nameservers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The name <strong>must<\/strong> consist of a prefix, a dot (<code>.<\/code>), and your domain. The common convention for nameservers is to prefix your domain name with <code>ns1<\/code> (for example, <code>ns1.example.com<\/code> and <code>ns2.example.com<\/code>).<\/li>\n<li>Your nameservers <strong>cannot<\/strong> share a name.<\/li>\n<li>We <strong>strongly<\/strong> recommend that you use a domain that reflects your company\u2019s main homepage URL.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 id=\"add-ip-addresses\">Add IP addresses.<\/h5>\n<p>To add IP addresses to your server, perform the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Navigate to WHM\u2019s <em>Add a New IP Address<\/em> interface (<em>WHM &gt;&gt; Home &gt;&gt; IP Functions &gt;&gt; Add a New IP Address<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Enter the IP address or IP address range in the <em>New IP or IP range to add text<\/em> box.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the subnet mask in the <em>Select a subnet mask for the IP or IPs above to use<\/em> text box.<\/li>\n<li>Enter any IP addresses that you wish to exclude in the <em>IPs and IP ranges to exclude from the range of new IPs<\/em> text box.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Submit<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5 id=\"create-a-or-aaaa-entries-for-your-nameservers\">Create A or AAAA entries for your nameservers.<\/h5>\n<p>To create A or AAAA entries for your nameservers, perform the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Navigate to WHM\u2019s <em>Basic WebHost Manager Setup<\/em> interface (<em>WHM &gt;&gt; Home &gt;&gt; Server Configuration &gt;&gt; Basic WebHost Manager Setup<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Next to the appropriate <em>Nameservers<\/em> text box, click <em>Configure Address Records<\/em>. A new interface will appear and the system will perform a DNS lookup on the nameserver that you entered.<\/li>\n<li>settingally, update the IP addresses in the appropriate text boxes.\n<ul>\n<li>To enter a different IPv4 address, enter a new value in the <em>Enter an IPv4 address to create an A record<\/em> text box or <em>Confirm the IPv4 address to create an A record<\/em> text box.<\/li>\n<li>To enter a different IPv6 address, enter a new value in the <em>Enter an IPv6 address to create an AAAA record (settingal)<\/em> text box.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Configure Address Records<\/em>. The system will display the results of your changes.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Close<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat these steps for each nameserver.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5 id=\"create-a-entries-for-your-hostname\">Create A entries for your hostname.<\/h5>\n<p>To create A entries for your hostname, perform the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Navigate to WHM\u2019s <em>Add an A Entry for Your Hostname<\/em> interface (<em>WHM &gt;&gt; Home &gt;&gt; DNS Functions &gt;&gt; Add an A Entry for Your Hostname<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Enter your server\u2019s IP address in the available text box.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Add Entry<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5 id=\"set-up-nameservers-with-your-registrar\">Set up nameservers with your registrar.<\/h5>\n<p>After you configure your server\u2019s nameservers, you <strong>must<\/strong> register your nameservers with your registrar.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When you register nameservers, you announce their existence to the rest of the internet. You do <strong>not<\/strong> perform this action in cPanel &#038; WHM, but you <strong>must<\/strong> do it or your nameservers will <strong>not<\/strong> function.<\/li>\n<li>For steps for many popular registrars, see the Instructions for various registrars section below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5 id=\"manage-reseller-nameservers\">Manage reseller nameservers.<\/h5>\n<p>After you configure your nameservers, you may wish to configure special nameservers for your server\u2019s resellers. We design cPanel &#038; WHM to accommodate a white-label reseller experience, which allows customizable branding. You can configure hosting resellers to each use their own nameservers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout callout-info\">\n<div class=\"callout-heading\">Note:<\/div>\n<div class=\"callout-content\">\n<p>Resellers may use their own nameservers, but individual cPanel accounts <strong>cannot<\/strong> use their own nameservers.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>To edit nameserver names and assign nameserver IP addresses for individual reseller nameservers, use WHM\u2019s <em>Edit Reseller Nameservers and Privileges<\/em> interface (<em>WHM &gt;&gt; Home &gt;&gt; Resellers &gt;&gt; Edit Reseller Nameservers and Privileges<\/em>).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"configure-via-the-initial-setup-assistant\">Configure via the Initial Setup Assistant<\/h2>\n<div class=\"callout callout-info\">\n<div class=\"callout-heading\">Note:<\/div>\n<div class=\"callout-content\">\n<ul>\n<li>We <strong>removed<\/strong> these portions of the <em>Initial Setup Assistant<\/em> interface in cPanel &#038; WHM version 76. In later versions of cPanel &#038; WHM, you <strong>must<\/strong> use WHM interfaces or the command line to perform these tasks.<\/li>\n<li>These steps assume that you successfully completed the cPanel &#038; WHM installation process, logged in to WHM, and completed the first three sections of the <em>Initial Setup Assistant<\/em> interface.<\/li>\n<li>In cPanel &#038; WHM version 64 and earlier, WHM\u2019s <em>Initial Setup Assistant<\/em> interface was the <em>Initial Setup Wizard<\/em> interface.<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>To configure nameservers via the <em>Initial Setup Assistant<\/em> interface, perform the following steps:<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"select-a-nameserver-software-1\">Select a nameserver software.<\/h5>\n<div class=\"callout callout-info\">\n<div class=\"callout-heading\">Note:<\/div>\n<div class=\"callout-content\">\n<p>If you already use your registrar\u2019s DNS services, you can skip this step.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Select the desired nameserver software. cPanel &#038; WHM offers the following nameserver software:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><em>BIND<\/em> \u2014 The system defaults to BIND in cPanel &#038; WHM version 82 and earlier.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><em>PowerDNS<\/em> \u2014 The system defaults to PowerDNS in cPanel &#038; WHM version 84 and later.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout callout-info\">\n<div class=\"callout-heading\">Note:<\/div>\n<div class=\"callout-content\">\n<p>For most servers, we recommend that you select <em>PowerDNS<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><em>MyDNS<\/em> \u2014 We deprecated MyDNS in cPanel &#038; WHM version 78 and plan to remove it in a future release. You <strong>can\u2019t<\/strong> select this setting.<\/p>\n<div class=\"callout callout-warning\">\n<div class=\"callout-heading\">Important:<\/div>\n<div class=\"callout-content\">\n<ul>\n<li>We strongly recommend that you migrate to PowerDNS. You will need to enter each octet of your IP address in its respective text box.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Update<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat steps 3 through 6 for your second nameserver.<\/li>\n<\/ol><\/div>\n<p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\">\n<p>        DynaDot<\/p>\n<div class=\"collapse show\" id=\"adynadot1626990045150121446\">\n<div class=\"card card-body\">\n<p>To register with DynaDot, perform the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click <em>Domain Names<\/em> on the right side of the interface.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Nameservers<\/em> near the top of the interface.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Register a domain name server<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the full name of your first nameserver (for example: <code>ns1.example.com<\/code>) in the <em>Host Name<\/em> text box.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the IP address for that nameserver.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Submit<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat steps 2 through 6 for your second nameserver.<\/li>\n<\/ol><\/div>\n<p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\">\n<p>        Enom<\/p>\n<div class=\"collapse show\" id=\"aenom1626990045150182633\">\n<div class=\"card card-body\">\n<p>To register with Enom, perform the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click <em>Select Domain Names<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Register DNS<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Use the <em>Register a Nameserver Name<\/em> feature in the first section of the interface to create your nameservers.<\/li>\n<\/ol><\/div>\n<p>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"accordion-item\">\n<p>        GoDaddy<\/p>\n<div class=\"collapse show\" id=\"agodaddy1626990045150271434\">\n<div class=\"card card-body\">\n<p>To register with GoDaddy, perform the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Under the <em>Domains<\/em> heading, click <em>All Domains<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Locate the domain for which you wish to set up your nameservers.<\/li>\n<li>Click the gear icon and select <em>Manage DNS<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Click the <em>Settings<\/em> tab.<\/li>\n<li>Under the <em>Host Names<\/em> setting, click <em>Manage<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Add Hostname<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the primary nameserver\u2019s name (for example, <code>ns1<\/code>) in the <em>Hostname<\/em> text box.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the primary nameserver\u2019s IP address in the <em>IP Address<\/em> text box.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Add<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat steps 6-9 for your secondary nameserver (for example, <code>ns2<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Save<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em>Edit Nameservers<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Select <em>Custom<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the full hostnames of your two nameservers.
